 DR. JULIANA GUERRA

I am a IMG from Brazil. In my graduation year, 2013, I came to Miami for an observership and it was such an incredible experience, that I started exploring the possibility of coming to US for further training.

Soon after my graduation, I started working as a general practitioner in small health centers in the countryside. At that time, I felt very frustrate about the quality of the medical care I was able to offer my patients and decided that I needed to do more for myself and for them.

In 2015, My husband and I decided to go to Portugal, where he received full license to work, and I started studying for the USMLE steps.

In 2017 I completed my steps and observerships and then I applied for internal medicine residency. Unfortunately on that year I only received one interview invitation, and in March of 2018, I learned that I had not matched.
After that sad experience, I had to do a lot of research to figure out what to do to increase my chances of matching. It took a lot of effort and patience, and I pursue a research position in Miami.

During my research year I worked really hard, was able to maintain strong networking, published several articles, and presented at important international conferences in the United States.  I learned so much from my mistakes in this process that I felt an obligation to help others who, like me, had difficulty finding information about the process of matching into a residency program in the US.

In 2019, I applied again, but now with a much richer and better structured curriculum, with a much more interesting personal statement, with spectacular letters of recommendation and with important networking. I received 7 invitations for an interview and I matched!Since 2020 I've been sharing everything I know with my mentees, hoping that no one goes through some of the dark days I went through, from not knowing enough about the process!
